We do Chinglish — on purpose

China’s best stories, told the way a friend would tell you — no fancy words, no homework, just the good stuff.

Classics don’t have to be hard.
If you can’t read it, what’s the point?

Most translations of Chinese classics are written by scholars, for scholars. They’re accurate. They’re also hard work to read. We take a different road: we write for normal people.

Our promise is simple — if a high-schooler can’t get it on the first read, we rewrite it. We’d rather be clear than clever. We’d rather be a little rough than unreadable.

We even own the name: Chinglish. It’s not a bug, it’s the point. China’s wisdom, in English you can actually read.

How we translate

Three rules, all aimed at one thing: you understand it the first time.

懂

Understanding first

If we have to choose between exact and clear, we choose clear. Getting the meaning across beats getting every word.

直

Plain and direct

We keep the Chinese way of saying things where it still makes sense. That’s the charm — it just shouldn’t hurt your head.

白

Everyday English

Classical Chinese → simple modern Chinese → simple English. No “heretofore”, no footnotes, no showing off.
