Chinese Zodiac Animals: The 12 Signs Explained

Every Chinese New Year, someone asks: “What’s my sign?” And then everyone spends ten minutes calculating lunar dates and arguing about whether January babies count.

The Chinese zodiac is a 12-year cycle, each year tied to an animal. It’s simple on the surface and surprisingly deep underneath.

Here’s the plain-English version.

The 12 animals, in order

The cycle always runs in this order:

  1. Rat (鼠)
  2. Ox (牛)
  3. Tiger (虎)
  4. Rabbit (兔)
  5. Dragon (龙)
  6. Snake (蛇)
  7. Horse (马)
  8. Goat (羊)
  9. Monkey (猴)
  10. Rooster (鸡)
  11. Dog (狗)
  12. Pig (猪)

Every 12 years, it repeats.

How to find your sign

Find your birth year, then match it to the cycle.

Rough rule: 2020 is Rat, 2021 Ox, 2022 Tiger, 2023 Rabbit, 2024 Dragon, 2025 Snake — and so on.

The catch: the Chinese year starts at Spring Festival (late January or February), not January 1. So if you were born in January or early February, you might belong to the previous year’s animal.

Why these 12 animals?

There’s a famous story: the Jade Emperor held a race, and the first 12 animals to cross a river got a year named after them.

The Rat won by hitching a ride on the Ox and jumping off at the last second. The Pig came last because it stopped to eat and nap.

It’s a folk tale, not history — but it explains the order, and it’s fun to tell.

What your sign “means”

  • Rat: clever, resourceful, quick
  • Ox: steady, reliable, strong
  • Tiger: brave, confident, impulsive
  • Rabbit: gentle, elegant, cautious
  • Dragon: ambitious, charismatic, lucky
  • Snake: wise, mysterious, private
  • Horse: energetic, free, impatient
  • Goat: calm, creative, kind
  • Monkey: witty, curious, mischievous
  • Rooster: observant, hardworking, proud
  • Dog: loyal, honest, protective
  • Pig: generous, sincere, easygoing

Take it lightly. It’s astrology, not personality science — but it’s a great conversation starter.

The deeper layer: elements

Each year also has an element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. Combined with the animal, that gives 60 combinations (12 animals × 5 elements).

So 2024 wasn’t just “Year of the Dragon” — it was “Wood Dragon.” 2025 is “Wood Snake.” The full cycle takes 60 years.

Why it still matters

In China, the zodiac isn’t just for fun. People check compatibility before marriage, plan births around “lucky” years (Dragon years are popular), and wear charms for their sign.

It’s a cultural shorthand — a way to talk about personality, luck, and timing that everyone understands.
